New York State has recorded the highest number of flu-related hospitalizations in a single week, highlighting a severe influenza season. According to the New York State Department of Health, 4,546 people were hospitalized during the week ending December 27. This represents a 24 percent increase compared to the previous week.
The sharp rise in hospital admissions follows another record earlier in December, when more than 72,000 flu infections were reported in just seven days. Due to the widespread nature of the outbreak, health authorities declared influenza to be prevalent, requiring unvaccinated healthcare workers to wear masks in patient areas.
Health officials have warned that this season is more serious than those in recent years. Experts believe the surge is partly caused by a new flu strain, known as subclade K, which is linked to the H3N2 influenza A virus. This strain has already led to high infection rates in several countries, including Canada and Japan.
Flu activity is also increasing across the United States, with New York listed among states experiencing very high respiratory illness levels. Public health agencies continue to recommend flu vaccination for most people, emphasizing that early treatment can reduce severe outcomes.
